Orange Crate
what is a easy, cheap way to make nest boxes or what to make it out of?

i have come up with floor boxes (lg litter boxes, old orange crates, & tote boxes from wal-mart) what else is usable? do layers really use floor boxes? just throwing out ideas and wondering if anybody knew anything more

EASY NEST BOXES: Take a 5 gallon sheetrock mud bucket (with lid) and put four screws into the bottom of it into a wall. Have a 2x4 block on the wall to make it slant upwards. Cut 1/2 of the lid out, leaving the lip where it locks onto the bucket. Put straw in bucket and you have a nest. If the chickens are too tall to duck through the opening, cut out a little more. You can screw a perch onto the 'bottom' of the bucket (the side that's towards the floor) to make it easier for them to get into it.

Chickens don't really like to lay eggs in floor boxes, but they will if that's the only place available. My nesting boxes are three rows tall with five boxes per row, but they never lay eggs on the bottom row. It's all just trial and error, unless you know someone who grew up with chickens. (I don't)
